The prospect's email had three questions.

The AI draft answered two of them. The third — the one about data residency requirements for EU customers — got skipped entirely. The rep reviewed the draft, liked the tone, and hit send.

Two days later, the prospect replied: "You didn't address our data residency question. That's actually our main concern before we can proceed."

The deal didn't die that day. But it stalled for a week while the right answer got sourced and sent. By then, the prospect had taken a second call with a competitor. The deal closed — just not with you.


The skipped question problem

Multi-part emails are the norm in sales and support. Prospects evaluate tools. Customers escalate issues. Decision-makers do diligence before signing. These emails don't ask one clean question — they ask three or four, sometimes with the most important one buried in the third paragraph.

Generic AI handles the easy ones well. It drafts a confident reply to the questions it can answer from general knowledge — pricing structure, general capabilities, typical onboarding timelines. The harder question, the one that requires retrieving a specific policy, a compliance doc, or an integration detail, gets quietly skipped.

Not flagged. Not marked uncertain. Just absent.

The draft looks complete. It has an opening, a body, and a closing. Three paragraphs of professional prose. The rep reads it and it feels thorough — because nothing in the draft signals that something is missing.


Why AI skips the hard questions

Generic AI generates answers from what it knows with confidence. When it encounters a question it can't answer reliably from general knowledge — a compliance certification, a specific SLA term, a data handling detail — it doesn't say "I don't know." It moves past it and answers something else instead.

This behavior is especially common with:

Compliance and security questions. "Do you have SOC 2 Type II certification?" or "Where is customer data stored?" require specific, verifiable answers from your security docs. Generic AI either guesses or skips.

Contractual edge cases. "What happens to our data if we cancel mid-cycle?" or "Is there a minimum commitment on the Enterprise plan?" These depend on the exact terms in your agreements — not on what SaaS contracts typically look like.

Integration specifics. "Does your Salesforce integration support custom objects?" requires a current, accurate answer from your integration docs. Generic AI may answer the spirit of the question with something plausible but imprecise.

In each case, the AI produces a reply that reads as complete but isn't. The missing answer isn't obvious to the rep reviewing it, because the draft doesn't leave a visible gap.


The contrast

A prospect asks: "Can you confirm your SOC 2 status, whether you support SSO, and what your data retention policy is after account cancellation?"

Generic AI draft:

"Security is a top priority for us. We follow industry best practices for data protection and work with enterprise customers on compliance requirements. SSO is available on our higher-tier plans, and we're happy to discuss specific security needs during an onboarding call."

Three questions asked. Zero answered with specificity. The prospect now has to follow up on all three.

KB-grounded draft:

"A few answers: We completed SOC 2 Type II certification in November 2024 — the full report is available under NDA on request. SSO (SAML-based) is included on Pro and Enterprise plans. On data retention: all customer data is deleted within 30 days of account cancellation, with an export window available during that period." All three questions answered. Every claim cited. The prospect has what they need to move forward.


What completeness checking actually does

The difference between these drafts isn't writing quality. It's whether the system checked that every question in the inbound email received a substantive answer before the draft was finalized.
